The United States Supreme Court overturned the court ruling of Roe v. Wade in June, 2022, which removed federal protection of human rights regarding abortion. On November 8th, 2022, state and federal elections will take place across the country where it is anticipated that elected officials that oppose human rights to privacy and autonomy will be rejected.
This hoodie features a design of the late Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg wearing a Guy Fawkes mask—made popular in the U.S. with the movie V for Vendetta.
On the back it reads, “Roevember, Roevember, vote blue in November” – a play on words from the first two lines of the famous poem titled The Fifth of November (c.1870) that were originally, “Remember, remember! The 5th of November.” The date is significant because on November 5, 1605, a Catholic man named Guy Fawkes attempted, but failed, to blow up England’s House of Parliament, which was controlled by Protestants at the time. Every year, they celebrate Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Gunpowder Treason Day, and Fireworks Night. An effigy of Guy Fawkes is burned in a bonfire.
A British graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd titled V for Vendetta was initially published between 1982 and 1985. The movie based on this book came out in 2005. The primary protagonist wears a Guy Fawkes mask with the plan to blow up the House of Parliament because, in their alternate universe, England is ruled by a far-right, ultranationalist political party that is a brutal fascist and totalitarian regime lead by a High Chancellor whom imprisons or executes those deemed undesirable, including immigrants, queer and gender nonconforming folks, and people of alternate religions.
I made this design because it seems like the United States of American may fall into a dystopian future, where our 45th/47th president is looking more and more like a far-right, nationalist, fascist, totalitarian dictatorship. This is a future I do not want, and like Guy Fawkes and V, I too protest against our current, federal government.
