Looking to get an educational poster about who holds the most power in the room to bring awareness to your organization or the perfect passive-aggressive gift for your conservative friends and family?
This infographic is a visual interpretation of different areas that discrimination can happen. Those that find themselves in the outer ring for any given wedge are more likely to experience marginalization. Those that identify themselves in the middle ring are more likely to experience subtle discrimination, or erasure, like being forgotten in awareness campaigns. In contrast, those that find themselves in the innermost ring may not experience many struggles for that given wedge, it may not be something they’ve even think about throughout the day since it’s nothing special.
Your place in this wheel does not define who you are or negate your experiences. It only highlights what attributes work best with our current systems—more challenges are likely to occur as you navigate outward from the circle. Those farther away from the center may see “the system” as broken, while those closer see it working just fine.
In short, we want those with power to recognize that others struggle in areas they didn’t think about before, and to invite them to the proverbial table where decisions about them are being made.
